How college graduates can meet and surpass manager expecations

Are recent college graduates trained for what is expected in the workplace?

Did COVID lower a college graduate’s likelihood of success in the workforce?

Are recent college graduates set up to succeed or fail post-COVID? Are you a manager hiring recent graduates? Today’s post uncovers a phenomenon I don’t think employees or hiring managers have realized. This post isn’t your “generational differences in the workplace.” This post covers:

  • Unconscious habits that post-COVID graduates are bringing to the workforce
  • Unconscious expectations that hiring managers will expect in a post-COVID work environment.

Getting ready for your first job interview experience?

Your first job interview experience is coming up. Don’t worry, HRN here to spit some knowledge so you know what to expect. More importantly, I am here to explain how to act so you can elevate your interview game. Last week, we started part 1 of this 2 part series. In that post,

Do you know what to expect with your first job interview?
The dreaded first job interview

Your first job interview is like any other experience when meeting another person. First encounters range from “Get me the f*&$ out of here” to “I nailed it.” We have all had interviews and first dates where we felt the above or somewhere in between. When I coach clients, I often compare and contrast the first job interview experience with a first date.

In the past two blog posts, we discussed two related topics.

  1. A candidate who was VERY accomplished and someone any company would love to hire. Unfortunately, she didn’t realize that she needed to be descriptive and detailed about her accomplishments. Hence she looked just average.
  1. Why hard work goes unnoticed and the benefits of talking about what we are going to do BEFORE we do them.

HRNasty, I know I am a quiet person. I am also smart and I have ideas, but I don’t seem to be getting the opportunities like my loud peers who brag about what they do. Do I have to be a schmoozing douche to get ahead in the corporate world? My colleagues aren’t that smart but they keep getting all the job promotions.

Lessons from Hollywood

I love movies. Movies are an escape from my day-to-day. No one yells at me in the movie theater, no one wants a decision out of me and most of all, no one is complaining to me. The biggest decision I make is regular or extra butter on my popcorn and do I pee before the movie starts or can I hold it for the next 2 hours. #FirstWorldProblems for sure. I often assign employees homework in the form of movies.

Thanks for 2015

As 2015 comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to thank all of the subscribers and supporters of the blog. When I started this blog 5 years ago, it was an excuse to lock down a URL for a nickname given to me by my co-workers. I didn’t have a blog in mind. Vainly, I just wanted the URL. I was casually helping folks find jobs and had several white papers I put together on the topic.
